Red Bubble algae growing on rocks , Is this bad?

I had aquired some live rocks and

Now I see some clumps of red bubbles growing on them..
I'm thinking is red bubble algae.

Will this stuff spread quickly all over?

Do emerald crabs eat this stuff?

Thanks for the help

First off, don’t pop the bubbles…they could contain spores, which will cause it to spread.

My understanding is that Emeralds are hit or miss. Some eat it up…others could care less.

The best way to rid your tank is to physically pull it out (without bursting the bubble).

i'm not an expert on algae but i always thought the bubble stuff was metallic/green kinda. Anyways i agree with redfish. From my experience, i would just do a water change, then before dumping the old water out, take the LR out and then scrape the offending algae off. Use the old water to swish it around a bit to get any remnants off - then put back in the tank.

I've seen another method which is to attach a toothpick/sharp object to the end of some hose. Start a siphon and as you siphon water out, scrape the bubbles off in the tank (using the siphon to suck out any cells that may come lose).

I thought bubble alge was greenish as well. I try to suck them out while I syphon water out while doing my water change. It seems to work well for me. I have some spots were I just can't get to them. But overall the method I've used has worked for me.

I just got through with this crap, Red Slime it is actually. Get yourself some Chemi-Clean and you'll be set. Just really follow the directions on there. Trust me, the stuff will grow back no mater what you do. Are you using RO/DI water as well?

There is Green and Red bubble algae. If theres not too many, I would leave them alone. They look nice and won't hurt anything and the spores won't spread.

No there is re species of valonia(bubble algae). It isn't nearly as invasive as the green one is. It is actually a rather pretty macro algae, I have deliberately put it in a few of my tanks.

It is totally different from red slime algae which is actually a cyano bacteria and not even an algae.

Stuff I had was spreading like a beast all over the tank and it was all over my corals, disgusting. It was bubbly as well, it was all over the sand and would come off in like patches.

That was cyano bacteria. Valonia is little ball shaped algae. Each bubble is an individual algae that usually grows in clusters.

Hello, Thanks for the info :)

I know it's not Red slime on my rocks , It's a Bubble algae and It's Red ...

If it reprduces Slow then I'm keeping them in there ,

They are pretty cool to look at.

I didn't want to leave it in there if the red bubble algae would

spread all over the tank out of control.

I had red slime in my other tank &

that was concerd with a phosband reactor , a pretty simple cure for me.

Red slime is bad yucky stuff. Definatly don't want that in my tank.

Look like this?

yeah, That's it !

Dose this spread all over , or is it controlable.

I'm hoping that it will stay were it is &
grow bigger like the one in the picture above.

I see it growing in a few different spots in my new set up...
but my clusters are not as big as the pictures yet.

so... These are good ? ....

Been trying to get a exact ID on this with no results. This one seems to be a slow grower, and has spread to a few small colonys so far, but not invasive like some bubble algaes.

I have this in my sump and in my overflow... never makes it to the main tank (or if it does its eaten, I do have a couple red mithrax crab so maybe if it gets in the main they eat it). The bubbles are pretty easy to pull off w/o popping.

I had them in a nano for a while. They never seemed to cause any problem and then disappeared on their own after about 6 months.

Thanks for the input everyone

Sound like red bubble algea an ok thing to have.

I'll watch it to see how fast it grows.

If it dose get out of had, I'll have to take rocks out and remove some

Thanks again
