Red Macro Algae, Small Black Snails

Yesterday I went to the jersey shore (Sandy Hook) and there were millions of small black snails, crabs, pipe fish, and killies in a bunch of tide pools. I also saw and abundance of Red macro Algae. Is the red macro algae safe for me to put in in my sump? How about the snails?

i have those snails in my display. they are great. stir the sand and can flip themselves over! dunno bout the macro though.. i haveth no sump

just because 2 different parties caught snails in the same location doesnt make them the same species. regardless any kind of snail found around here wont last very long in our tanks due to the warmer waters we keep. i personally would ID anything i wish to put into my tank first. the algae may work but could go sexual and take over your tank, you never know unless you ID the species.

uh.. i have had my snails since last summer. i would say thats a rather good amount of time for them to last. i know a few people on this site who use the same snails, thats why i didnt really have to dna test them to figure out the species. so let me say this IF THEY ARE THE SAME SNAILS I USE THEY WILL BE FINE. better?

thats the ones i got... i mean, i know theres more than one species of snail in nj waters and all, but no matter where i have gone lookin, these are the guys i find everywhere. and again, in my opinion they work better than the ones from the store just acclimate them very slow

Heh well I am heading down to the jersey shore this weekend and I have a little 10 gallon tank that I will be using to collect. W/E I collect and bring back I will take pictures of it for everyone to see. From the Macro Algae down to the snails and crabbies I pick up. Maybe we could identify them and whether or not they are reef safe :). The Red macro algae especially because its a beautiful blood red and I can get all I want for free!!!. It would be cool to have a fuge and sump full of blood red algae.

I have a bunch of those mud snails in my reef and they have been in there for two summers. They seem to be reef safe and never go near the corals. They like the glass.
Almost all of the crabs you can collect locally will live in your tank. You may not want to put them in there but they will live. Especially the Japanese Shore crabs that are under every rock. The problem with them is that they climb out. Not to mention I doubt any local crabs are reef safe. The hermits are not bad as they are small but we do get giant ones. Those are a different species. I have some hermits for two years but they are in a local tank which is not heated or lit. I do not put local hermit crabs in my reef.
The grass shrimp are fine to add, any fish large enough will eat them but they will live forever.
