Reef Addatives/suppliments

I was thinking of beginning a regiment of adding supplements to support coral growth and overall tank health. Trying to get some feedback on products like Combisan and the like. Can anyone shed some light on this subject. I do a 25% water change every two weeks. Just not sure if this is enough. Thanks.

How big is the tank and what do you currently have it stocked with? On smaller tanks (10-25G) with LPS and Softies only sometime 25-30% water changes are enough to keep levels in check. So we really need some more info first.

I have a 54 Gal corner tank with a small acan, toadstool, small blasto, green mushrooms, small to medium brain coral, small sea fan, emerald green crab, some small reef hermits, pistol shrimp, Halloween hermit, small yellow tang, 2 small cardinals, small carpenter wrasse and a metallic goby.

How long has the tank been set up and how have the water parameter been? Where does your calcium and magnesion stand? If doing simple weekly/bi-weekly water changes allows those levels to stay where there at then Id say you dont "have" to dose just yet. I was told when I first started adding corals that I didn't need to dose. But at some point where you have alot of corals they will start to consume more calcium and magnesion before your next water change. Even now with 15 corals in my 10G nano I dont see much of a drop at all. Right now my calcium is sitting at 440 and magnesion is 1320. The corals are open and full so I just let the system do what it does.

Thank you for your advise. The tank has only been up for two months. I have not yet tested for calcium or magnesium. I will soon. Here is a picture.

I think you are way to early in to start worry about dosing anything for your corals. If you do consistent water changes where your tank is now, you should be fine. There is still a lot of debate over coral foods as to weather they really work or are just snake oil. If your calcium, alkalinity and magnesium are all in line with low phosphates and nitrates then you will have success with corals.

Thats seems to be the general consensus. I value the opinions of you veteran reefers. I actually rely on it. My LFS had the same advise. I like to get more than one opinion though. Now I have three. Thank you.
