So now that the a/c and fans are off, I'm noticing a distinct smell. Kind of smells like rotting algae for lack of a better description. Everything in tank is fine.

I'm starting to think this is just the result from keeping 4 tanks, a sump and the kids' Betta fish in the same isolated room with little ventilation.

Are there any reef safe air fresheners I can put in there?

Yes. A bowl of baking soda. Change it more often than you may think. Also. There are electric options that use static. And fans that utilize carbon. But simplest I know is baking soda Just avoid any of the sprays. Sprays will get in you water I don’t care how carful you are

I have air wick plug ins and never had issues.

I will use a febreeze car puck thrown on the out fan to the dehumidifier when I'm dumping the overflow container from the skimmer (usually monthly), or when I'm cleaning the skimmer cup assembly (Every six months or so thanks to a neck cleaner!). I notice no issues with my tank. I do this because the old skimmate residue is so bad.

That said, I only notice a smell coming from my tank when I have high organics/nutrients. Do you run carbon? That may help. Once I start to smell anything, I know the carbon has to be changed.

you know my tank rarely smells but once i started feeling store bought shrimp pieces to feed my nems the protein skimmer becomes a nuclear bomb in my room so usually i empty the cup right before and couple hours after havent had issues my rooms small and its cant smell anything if i dont shrimp feed

I am running activated carbon. I think the smell is a combination of: (i) the phyto feeder container; (ii) the (refigerated-in-wine-cooler) reef nutrition feed; and (iii) my trimming of my fuge two weeks ago but leaving the timmed algae in an open bucket in the room for two weeks.

I obviously took care of number 3 but numbers 1 and 2 are here to stay, unless I abandon my automatic feeding, which I am not willing to do.

My skimmer has been a little wonky lately. I think it is still getting used to the system as I add livestock. The other day, it was continuously overflowing. I adjusted water level and air level and now the bubles are breaking just before flowing into the collection cup but still no skimmate. In any event, I don't think that's the source of the odor.
