ReekKeeper Temperature Probes

I’m old and don’t like change, and I’m happier than a pig in mud with my old technology ReefKeeper 2 controllers. I now have three of them, and they suit my needs just fine……until picking up my last one. The first two RK-2’s had nice metal (probably bimetallic) temperature probes that are as stable as stable could be. This last one has what they call an i-temp probe that looks more like a pH probe with a glass frit bulb at the end. I DON’T LIKE IT! I want my good old metal one for this RK-2 as well. Why did they change these. Metal is submersible and indestructible. This glass one is, well, not! Here’s the newer “old” style probe (that is listed for herpetology) (The old ones I have actually have silvery metal ends on them):

And here it the “new” i-temp probe:

Your iTemp picture is a Ph probe. :p

It's a photo directly from the DA site for their i-temp probe? And I see it now on the larger picture I've posted...you can see "pH." I've edited the OP with the i-temp photo form Marine Depot....this one says i-temp on the side.

I erred….I though the current temperature probes I have had silvery metal ends…..they don’t. They look just like the picture above…..plastic coated probes. So I’ve been using their “herpetology” temperature probe, fully submerged, for over five years!

For those using ReefKeepers (2’s, elites, lites, whatever), what type of temperature probe do you have, and do you like it? I’m a little leery about the glass fritted one I receive with my recent purchase.

Paul, the iTemp is not that bad. I have the iTemp probe and two JBJ heaters with their own controllers. All 3 are calibrated to a good 'ol glass aquarium thermometer. The iTemp and JBJ's are never usually more than 0.2 degrees off from each other.

I’m just scratching my head on these glass frit probes. I’ve got to believe these go bad……and then what happens to the temperature in your tank when they crap out?

In my miniscule brain the “herpetology” temperature probes appear to be more stable, submersible, and lasting for ever.
