Refugium feed water

I'm setting up a separate refugium and wanted to know if using the return water is better or using overflow water is better. I have the option to do either. I have a filter sock which both overflows currently feed into which removes the larger solid pieces of waste and was thinking to either t-off the return water (after sock and protein skimmer)or take one of the two overflows (before the sock) to feed the refug. Does it really make a difference?

i run my refuge as my main sump, in from the overflows back to the display wjth the skimmer looped in at the intake side of the sump

One thing to keep in mind is that you don't want a lot of turn over in your fuge. That being the case, it's best to set up a scenario where you can send a portion of your systems flow through the fuge at a lower rate and have it drain back to the sump.

In my system, I have the fuge fed by a Tee off of my main return pump. Instead of sending all of the water back to the display (and other tanks), a small portion goes through the fuge and drains back into the sump. This allows me to optimize the amount of turn over in the fuge.

HTH.

my fuge is 15 inches deep, so the fast moving water goes across the topp, and a large portion stays in the fuge for a while, so far it has worked out great the way i have it set up

Mine is setup like JohnS_323's. I am going to change it though and feed the fuge from one of the drains. I am going to tee off one of the drains and send some of the water directly to the fuge. The rest will go into the skimmer area and from there to the return pump. This will allow the water coming from the tank to feed the fuge as opposed to water from the skimmer that is headed back to the tank.

36x15x15, the fuge section is 24x15, the intake and return chambers are 6x15 each, i didnt need large skimmer area since my skimmer is all external, so i was able to build it with a larger fuge area
