Should you ever clean a refugium? I say no but there are times I'm tempted to move rocks around and do some cleaning
since I set it up I have only cleaned the front glass since mine is above the main tank for viewing pleasure

Standard answer number 1 ... It depends.

Has your refugium become a dirt trap, due to it's design or other factors?

In that case it may be desirable to clean it. If I felt it needed cleaning, I'd do only about 1/4 to 1/3 of it at a time, and it it's got a DSB I'd only clean the top 3/4 of an inch or less.

It is also acceptable to remove excess macro algae growth. That is in effect exporting nitrates.
