Removing encrusting corals

What's the best way to removing encrusting corals from rocks? I have some spongodes starting to grow in a number of locations and I'd like to keep them in check. I thought that I've seem in mentioned that kalk will do the trick but how do you apply it?

When I moved my tank any encrusting coral that I needed to get off a rock I just got a hammer and a flat head screwdriver and chipped them off. let me know if you need to find a new home for the spongodes

I used to use kalk paste, the same way to remove aptasia, etc. Used a home made syringe, pumps off for about 1/2 hr.
