Salinity issues

Maybe someone can shed some light on how to fix this. My current 90 gallon I keep at .26 sal. I usually have about 1-2 gallons of evap a day due to running a 8 inch fan on the top to keep the temp at 80.. After a few days my salinity goes up to .30-.33 which obviously isnt good. how can I keep my salinity at .26 the to poff water I use is r/o water with sal of .26.

You should be topping off with fresh water.(no salt)When water evap. the salt stays in the tank there for only top off with fresh water.

exactly. when your water evaporates it is pretty much just water ( no salt or minerals) they are heavier than air so donot evaporate. you should be topping off w/ 100% fresh r.o water, and doing your waterchanges with saltwater

How long have you been doing this?? I'm wondering why your salinity isnt off the charts.

hey there - just for future reference.

Salinity is measured in ppt - the correct value we try to get to is 35 ppt.

But specific gravity is measured in 1.026.

The way your post it written - the values seem like they are specific gravity.

With regards to the posts here - my only thought is that the skimmer takes out salty water. I realize it's only a cup or so - but if you constantly only put in 1.026 water and top off - eventually the salinity of the tank will decrease by every cup of saltwater being taken out via skimmer. Point being that you should take the time to check the SG every so often in the display. I like to run my skimmer wet and I get a large jug of water out every day.

I compensate by making my change over water a little bit over 1.026 SG. The other way would be to have a small amount of salt in the RO top off. Just a thought.

Didn't notice the trailing salinity as part of the top off. Although I would expect the number to be a lot higher, as already mentioned, unless frequent water changes are happening.

Might need some more info from the OP on this one.

by the way - i should have said - i totally agree with curt/scottyrock/ and others above - water that evaporates should be replaced with fresh water.

Yes sorry guys I meant my SG is 1.031 if not higher. I have been using 1.026 r/o saltwater as my top off maybe this could be my problem? I did a 20 gallon water change last night and got it down to 1.027-1.028. I am also using a hydrometer maybe I should get a refract to test?

If you are using salt water to top off, then this is almost certainly your issue.  You can use a refractometer, but I believe that is not relevant to your resolution, just a more accurate measurement tool.

those swing handle hydrometers are notorious for being inaccurate. See if you can borrow someone's refractometer - or purchase a new one. But definitely top off with fresh RO water (non-salted).

Great advice but if you MUST use a swing arm hydrometer, make sure you take multiple measurments. ANY bubbles on the arm will throw it off.
