San Fransico looking to ban ALL pet sales

It is legal in San Francisco to sell live animals for eventual human consumption, and the proposed ban would not stop markets from selling live fish, poultry, turtles or seafood for that purpose.

I have a feeling if this passes the LFS in San Francisco are all about to get a little disclaimer sticker on all of the tanks that says "FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION"... ;)

Silliest thing I ever heard!

For one, they aren't banning the right to own pets. They are just trying to make it illegal to sell them in San Fran. All this will do is make pet stores close up shop or move to another town. It will cause problems with people losing their jobs and/or businesses. It may even cause the loss of a few pets by stores moving to another location (fish as we all know can die of stress during transit.)

It is however a first step in the door for activists who want to make it illegal to own pets. I think this is the wrong way to solve the problem. There are plenty of people who love and care for their pets, and even treat them like family. These far out-weigh the amount of abusers out there... which is the real problem. Fix what is broken, not the solution.

What will happen if those good people aren't allowed to own pets anymore? Who will care for all the dogs/cats/birds/fish/reptiles/etc. out there? Do we just let them live in the wild?

If this passes, I would be shocked.

+1

It always amazes me how people don't think things all the way through. Despite whatever specific problem they were trying to address, their solution creates even more problems and isn't feasible on a city level and would not go over with so many people that it will NEVER happen.

Just a big time waster to even put the idea forward.

The main premise appears to be based on small animals - hamsters, guinea pigs, gerbils etc - that is the main big volume item that the shelter is talking about. The rep at the shelter is quoted as saying fish are not something she advocated to be included on the legislation but she isn't against it either as they have received goldfish bowls with pathetic goldfish in there and make a call as to whether to flush them or find a home.

I am kinda ok on the small animal thing. I know some of our sponsors sell these animals at $20, $30 a pop to make money. But in nj - there are shelters that exist and they are overflowing with these small animals. you could pay $20 and get one of your choice plus it would be neutered/sterilized.

The fish thing just makes it seem like the usual silliness when a good idea is made completely dumb with pork/amendments/changes etc.
