Sea Cucumbers

I have heard about the dreaded cuke nuc, but do not know anyone who has actually had this occur.

How big is the risk?

Tiger Tail a good cuc?

I have one in my tank. I did find another sea cucumber in a tidal pool in Florida...it pumped out a nice purple cloud when scared. The I guess the one I have is like tiger tail...sea turd as we call it. Nothing really bothers it and it is a great CUC member.

i purchased a tigertail a few years ago. i have 3 or 4 now. it split a few times. never harmed anything. ;)

What protection do you have in the tanks with a cuke ? Do you use mesh to cover the powerheads and pump intakes? If so what mesh do you use ? I plan on getting a cucumber this Tuesday.

Nothing mine never leaves the sandbed now when it was in a nano it would roam around more but it is not really soft and fleshy like say the lettuce slug. The two lettuce slugs I have had both ended up in the koralia....so no more of those. I think in the article that Phil provided it says something along the lines if they have food on the sandbed they will stay there.

nothing for mine either. i've never seen them on the glass. they always stay at thew base of the rockwork in the sand bed.

why are you thinking of getting a cucumber? does your sand bed looks dirty? they do some sand sifting, but they are certainly not a cure for a dirty sand bed.
it's not like they cruise the entire surface and vacuum it clean.

well .. in my case its not much dirty though ... but I dont want to get a sand sifting star and risk them cleaning up my bactertia population. My nassarius snails do get all exited when the sand is chruned(I have no idea if that actually means that they are consuming some polutant though). I dont run a skimmer on my invertibrate tank and am trying all natural avenues at keeping the tank healthy.

well, these will do the same thing a sand sifting star will do. they swallow dirty sand and poop out piles of clean sand. i think the nassarius snails are plenty.
if you still want a tigertail, i have a few of them and would be glad to give you one of mine. you would have to come and pick it up though.

here is the type i have:

Not really true in the sense that sandsifting stars will eat the small organisisms from the sand, versus waste and algae that a sea cucumber eats.

..thats what I knew ... but my knowledge is theoritical and Mr. X has a thriving population. So I decided to cork up.

I had no idea they could "split". Then I found one in my tank downstairs! I had no idea how it had gotten in there. I guess that might be the answer!

JRWOHLER,
Must have the same one I have, bands of light and dark brown. We call it a turd also. Had it for almost 2 years and never leaves the sand bed or rocks. Never knew they could split. The tiger tail is a cool looking turd though.

I also had a tigertail and a yellow cucumber for a few years with no problems in my 125 gallon. Eventually they died and I didn't have any issues either.
