I know I could search on finding a skimmer for my JBJ 28, but I thought I’d get the latest input from the members. So whose skimmer should I be looking at?
Hey Mike, thanks for the link. I was liking this DIY, and the price, until it got to his collection container. The only thing I can say is that he lied about the cost being $1. I see I now have to go buy a fifth of Jameson, which at my local watering hole is about $18. I can’t afford that, not to mention that I guess I’ll have to cut that whisky with that bottle of water I’ll have to drink.
Actually I was liking this little DIY until I got to where it said “wooden airstone.” Unless I’m doing something wrong, that is what is in the skimmer I received with the tank:
Maybe I should still buy that fifth of Jameson and play with this little wonder while sipping that whisky. Dance
I was so intrigued by the video link Mike posted about the $1 DIY skimmer that I soaked the wooden air block in vinegar overnight to give my little skimmer another chance. Today I hooked it up to Maxum air pump that came with the skimmer and was once again disgusted with the lack of any foam column. So I pulled the pump apart and found that one of the diaphragms was ripped. In the good old days you could go to your LFS and for $0.49 buy new diaphragms. I guess those days are long gone.
So still interested if I could get this little skimmer going like the video, I went back to the link and found that this guy used a Luft air pump…..which I looked up and found that it was $122….. discounted to $61 on Amazon.
So now to total up this so-called one dollar skimmer I will need a fifth of Jameson ($18), and a Luft air pump ($61). So this little DIY is actually an $80 skimmer!
