Skimmer/Sump

What's going on guys, I'm new to the community and I'm in the researching phase of a sump. I intend on building a 20 (30 if it'll fit under stand) sump for my 55g tank. Does anyone have any suggestions on if this size is adequate. Also, any layout plans you have used for a tank. If possible I'd like to include an auto top-off if possible.

My next question is recommendations for protein skimmers, like I said I have a 55g tank but I'd like something rated a little high in case I switch tanks soon. I don't mind spending money but I would also like to make sure the money is well spent. Thanks for reading!

I have never built a sump so I can't really help you there. For my 57g that I just broke down, I used the eshops medium sized sump which fit well and left me a little extra room to get some things down there. It was only 2 seciont so no fuge.

Skimmer wise, a lot of people including myself have really liked the swc lines of skimmers. A 120 would probably suit you fine but if you think you might upgrade you can look at the 160 just in case.

I am using a 20L sump on both my tanks, a 40 and 65, so you will be fine with a 20 on your 55. You can check out my 65G build thread HERE and see how I built my sump.

you dont by chance have the dimensions per section do you? my tank is a little smaller i just want to make sure i adequate space in each area. also, any recommendations for someone not doing a drilled sump

In my 20L's: Skimmer sections is 10x12", Center section is 12"x12" and Return section is 8"x12" with 2.5" between the baffles for a filter sponge.
