skimmer too big?

hey everyone. Ive seen this question asked, and its interesting to see what people think. Is it possible to over skim? I just got a bh2000 for my 40 gal. depending on who you ask I've seen it rated from 100-125 gal. so what do you think?

I dont ever think you can over skim, it's always good to get a skimmer rated higher then your tank.

Depending on what you are trying to keep. If you are doing a SPS tank then no, but if you do a LPS/Softy tank then yes as they like some nutrients in the water and will not do as well as if you skimmed less.

This is true LPS/Softies do like some nutrients in the water. However, if you feed constantly or supplement coral food like marine snow that should be enough to keep them happy with the larger skimmer. You also have to consider your tanks future bioload when choosing a skimmer. I am not sure what your plans are for your 40 gallon, but if you are planning to keep a good amount of fish that you can keep for a 40b with corals, larger rated skimmer is always good.

I think over sizing a skimmer is never a bad thing. One day you never know you might want to do a full sps tank and your skimmer will be able to handle it. We start liking one thing but some times thing change... You never know
