So finally I have gotten sick of looking at it so how do I clean it. It seems to be hard water staining on the top few and bottom few inches of the glass. I have tried razor blades but it does not do anything. To touch it feels a bit more rough then the rest of the glass. It was there when I got the tank used but seems to have gotten worse over the past few months. Now it's really getting to me. Basically it looks like a fogging of the glass. Algae builds up pretty quick on those areas but come off easily with razor/scrapers. For what it's worth this was a freshwater aquarium before I got it and it seems the prior owner just let water evaporate for awhile before draining. Then when the water got to the bottem he just let it evaporate off til gone. I have seen some glass cleaners available but all say to not use in a running tank. Do I stand a chance here of getting rid of it? Thanks in advance for the assist.

Does it looked frosted? it might be micro scratch's if it's not coming off with a razor and it feels rough.. If you have a magnifying glass I would see what it really is
I have ran into this problem getting used tanks for my son's lizards and turtles. I managed to get 90% of it clean using vinegar and a sharp razor; tank was dry. I had to repeat this 2 or 3 times. As for you trying this in your current tank is a tough call. You don't want to much vinegar in there. Maybe try a rag with a little vinegar on it and see if it comes off. Good luck.
I thought mabye scratches at first but does not seem so but I'll check again. As for the vinegar I could always try a bit during the water change as the top area is well above water line during that time. I could just try a small are each change. The bottem area is not to bad as most is below the sand line. On a better note mabye I could convince my wife that it time for a new tank.
