Starphire glass

has anyone here used starphire glass for a considerable amount of time? i was told that it scratches almost as easily as acrylic. i know with the new oceanic tech and ultimate tanks more and more people are using starphire. i dont think its in my budget yet, let me re phrase, i know its not in my budget yet but I was still curious.

I have a Tech tank. The Starfire is supposed to be softer than regular glass. I don't believe it is that easy to scratch...

liger - i really doubt that remark. Starphire is used in a lot of different settings besides consumer fish tanks (aquariums, zoos) and I doubt they'd be using them in if they scratch as easily as acrylic.

Link to the manufacturer - http://corporateportal.ppg.com/NA/IdeaScapes/productInfo/glass/StarGlassTOC.htm

If cost were an issue (and trust me, I hear ya) - I would consider getting it so that the main panel would be starphire - and not so much caring about the sides. Still pricey but a little more bearable. Another idea is to find a hobbyist quiting -never know, sometimes the right deal comes at the right time.

Starfire is quite a bit softer than regular glass and scratches easily. I believe it was BillyR that found this out the hard way.

thanks for the responses. the person who told me that wasnt too credible, thats why i figured id ask since i know there are people on this forum with starphire tanks. its something i will take consideration into in my next tank, but that wont be for at least a year. thanks for the link.

matt - interesting - did not know that. Why would a zoo be using starphire glass if it were softer? Seems like security would be a hugh risk - and it'd stink if the animals scratched up the glass. Then again its possible they have it for just fo tanks...anyways - interesting.

liger- also note that starphire is a commercial brand name for one type of low-iron glass (that happens to be manufactured by ppg). There are other brands of low-iron glass and while I think most aquariums use starphire- I dunno how one could check to verify...(like is there a stamp or note on the glass that says "Starphire"?)
