stocking 120 gallon

I will be upgrading to a 120. It will have 120 lbs of rock 2 inches of live sand A 30 or 40 gallon sump. I will be going with mostly softies and lps. I have not had a lot of luck when stocking a fish only. I was wondering how many fish and what combos everyone would go with.

I have a 120 and here's my stock list.

From Large to small:
1 Achilles Tang
1 Hippo Tang
1 Desarjini Tang
1 Watanabe Angel
1 Sargassum Trigger
1 Diamond Goby
2 False Percula Clowns
1 Manderin Dragonet
2 Neon Gobys
3 Green Chromis

It's a heavy load but the chromis, gobys, clowns are all small. And when the fish get too large i'll donate them to other reefers in the club. (Unless I get a bigger tank before that happens. 8))

Oh ... I forgot ... I have a helfrichi firefish too, one of my favorites, can't believe i forgot that one.

It's a full Reef.

Rather than make a list of fish to pick and choose from, let me give you a few guidelines.

Decide what sort of fish you want. Aggressive, docile, large, small, personality, color and so on. Consider what else will be in the tank, such as corals and inverts.

Chose each fish carefully, in that you want each one to be special for one reason or another. Each should be a gem in one way or another.

Since this is a large tank and may be viewed from across the room, consider that a small fish may not easily be seen.

Remember that to non-reef people, a colorful common fish looks as good as a rare expensive fish.

A few fish I especially like are -

Royal Grama
most of the Hawkfisk species
the more docile tang species
the various dwarf angel species
clowns
some of the damsels, make sure the rest of the fish can stand them
gobies
firefish species
jawfish species

There are sure plenty of other great fish. You'll have no real trouble stocking a tank.

I was under the impression that chromis and anthias (dont get all males) will school - but I believe it depends on the set up.

Others with more experience can chime in. Typical schools that one might see usually involve much bigger fish. I mean, I have seen a school of yellow tangs in hawaii but who can support that kind of bioload right?

I have learned a bit about schooling and things like that. Cromis actually school different than anthius. I also have 6 anthius and i find that they only school at night or when they are scared. Other than that they do their own thing.

We have 6 green chromis that tend to school somewhat. I've heard we're kind of lucky, though. Most people who buy a bunch of chromis say that they experience some sort of attrition that dwindles their numbers down. We've had our 6 forever and they seem to be doing really well.

Scuba dude, Funny that you started this post, I was going to post the same question. I also have a 120 that I would like to restock and I am looking for color and what I can put in the tank that will not bother my clam or corals.

I'd like to get a list together and then I'll have to find out where I'm going to buy. I really do not want to mail order any more.

I hope alot more people chime in, I would really like to see how they stock their tanks. C'mon people where are you? ;D

well my 120 is empty...just getting the process started... ;D

but I like tagging the "tale of the tanks" and following baxreef and napoliNJ updates...I know chase33 has a 120 also...there are others but I cant remember them all.

For me it's so early I don't know yet. I do know my wife would never forgive me unless I got a yellow-tail damsel. It's a long story but we had one for ages previously she became attached to the little guy. So I know what my last purchase will be...LOL.

I know chromis, fox fish, power blue tang, yellow tang wife wants a heniokis (not sure of spelling)clowns a blenny these are some I am leaning towards. Not sure how many I can put in

Get a small purple tang, or hippo tang, and just write it off as picking up the wrong fish. [grin]

Damsels have their place, but will cause a lot of problems for your more desirable fish.
