I would also suggest that anyone new to the hobby obtain several books on state of the art reef systems. Then read and study the material.

To have success with a reef requires a lot of background knowledge. While the information is on the net, it's not all in one place, and there is so much of information that it becomes impossible to take it all in.

By having a few books, you get an excellent, consolidated overview of the subject and reach a point where you can ask intelligent questions.

Next have some real idea about what you are going to try to keep. Depending upon what it is, the requirement will vary. Also, especially for smaller systems, realize what the limitations are. Size of the system, equipment installed, feeding, lighting, filtration, water flow, and a host of other factors will all set boundaries to what you can put in the system.
