Suggestions for glass protection for bare bottom reef ?

Moving soon and planning on upgrading to a 265 reef. Pretty sure I'm gonna go bare bottom and have a remote sand bed. The tank is 30" high and I plan on having the rock work go almost to the top in spots. So my question is what's the best material to put on the bottom of tank for some added protection from a boulder falling on to the bare bottom and turning a dream into a nightmare? I was thinkin of a piece of 3/16 plexi from the depot cause it's safe to put in the tank. Any suggestions?

If you're going BB, you obviously want something nice to look at. There's star board. I am current using egg crate under a SSB, but I think sheets of PVC are better than either the starboard or egg crate. But, I don;t see why plexi would not work as well.

You can get sheets of grey PVC that would allow you to solvent weld PVC pipe for rock stands and such right to the base sheet. I am looking at this for my next tank .. still going SSB though , I like sand.

... And welcome to NJRC!

I have known people to use plastic cutting boards, cut to fit the tank bottom. Obviously for a large tank you would need quite a few of them. They are tough and just about indestructible by aquarium standards. You can not easily glue anything to them, but this isn't as bad as it sounds, since the weight of the rock tends to keep any supporting structure in place.

I'd be careful with cutting boards. They are sometimes treated with algaecide or other chemicals to prevent bacteria.

well you could go with black starboard like I did. The Cutting Board Company is located in NJ so if you want to save money on shipping thats a plus the 2 pieces I used in my 150 where around $75 cut to fit. I have since taken my board out as I found way to much dietrius trapped under the board. Now I just have my rock sitting directly on the glass!

forgot to mention....you could also go with a faux sandbed. Do a search over on RC theres alot of threads on it and it looks good.

I actually called perfecto/marineland and you can get the 265 in starphire. No tale for me yet as I'm about a month or more away. Nice pics paimtman. I heard about the faux sand bed but never seen one in person. I'll have to do some more research on it. I was thinkin the plexi cause it will add some protection and i figure coralline will build up on it quickly. I have a 125 now wit the rocks stacked to the top but they are so stable I'm not that worried about them.
