Summer time temp

As we all know summer is just around the corner. I was wondering if there was a maximum tank temp for the corals and fish to still be happy in their environment.... Thanks in advance to all responses

I keep my tank set at 78...

Mine usually stays there through out the year on it's own ,

Except for those hot days that you don't have the air conditioner on

then the water will go up a few degrees,

Mine also seen 83 one day last year with no bad effects ,

but I wouldn't want to run it at that temp for long.

I heard you can use RO icecubes in an emergency to cool down water if had to

you don't really need RO ice cubes, any ices would do - just put them in a non-leaking plastic garbage bag and tie them well, then let it flow in your sump.

Well most folks can't fit a garbage bag in their sump and two most household garbage bags are treated to keep down odors and bacteria. I wouldn't trust putting them in any part of my tank. Just a couple 1 or 2 gallon size Ziploc bags will do. You can also use frozen water bottles too and they are able to be refrozen and used over and over again.

I like your ziplock bag idea to make the frozen emergency ice pack ,
It's made for food so shouldn't have any chemicals on it,
It wont take up to much room to float in tank when needed
and better then icecubes...
It wont melt in and mess up your salt levels ; )
Good Idea ! Thanks

and for those with the disposable income - a chiller could be bought!

i think my wife has already earmarked our tax return funds...lol.

if i had 700 just laying around this post would have never come to and i also hear that chilles in fact are good they produce horrible electric costs and actually raise the temp of the room your tank is in( live in a apartment so the rooms would just heat up and be loud all day long)

well there's always the good ole' standby of setting up a fan in the cabinet blowing across the sump.

The evap will be higher but it will help maintain the temp.

Another idea is to utilize T5 lighting instead of MH. I'd suggest LEDs but these days who knows what's going on with that.

yeah thats why im trying to sell my MH right now and get another t5 unit so i can get that cost down and keep the tank a little lower in temp which will allow me to keep the house temp with the A.C. on a little higher to cust the cost from trying to keep the house cooler so the tank can stay at a lower temp

I usually keep my tank at 78 as well. I've had it go up to 83 though. I put a 6 inch fan blowing accros the top of my sump to help cool it down. Evap deffinitly went up. But the fan worked.

My tank usually sits right around 81-82 but last summer it actually went up to 89 because something happened with the AC in the house while I was out... Everything lived through it but things didnt seem to happy that day... For the guys that are using fans... have you noticed a reasonable difference in temp?

A fan would be a good emergency item to have around it if can drop temp that much.

or

If using MH lighting a fan would be a must to keep temp cool.

I use the T-5 and they give off very little heat

I bought them to avoid having to use chiller.

I like the T-5's

I agree. T5 Are very nice. I finally got my final bulb config. And i think it looks great. As for the fan yeah it really does work pretty good. I drop cant four to five degrees with it easily. The only downside is that you will evap at a much higher rate. So make sure you are aware of that, keep an eye on your salt level. Or make sure you have an auto top off in place.

... please bear with me on this one ..

Looking at the title I thought, the Poster was looking at a cool places to intern at for the summer. I was almost about to suggest the Camden Aquarium. It is actually pretty nice, I spent a summer volunteering there.

Never mind all .. too many shrooms I guess.

( gogol ) your funny ,

You must have lots of shrooms growing in your tank ,

I bet you have all the different colors growing in there... LOL

I need to find something blue for my tank.

Way Cool job to be volunteering at ,
I bet that was awesome work to be around all that.

NJ Reefers should all get together and open up our own aqauarium

:D
