Sump\ Baffle question

Im setting up a 40 breeder to handle 2 tanks (120 + 57 ) = Total volume of 177
From my calculation I lose about 14 gallon of water from my 120 (inclusvie of Skimmer, Reactors and Overflow), and im estimating half as the loss for the 57 gallon so that brings overflow of about 20 gallons (14 from 120 + 7 from 57)
The breeder has a height of 18 inches so that makes each inch approx 2.22 gallons. So that means that i need to leave half of the tank empty for overflow purposes . I also need about 9 inches of water to operate the skimmer effectively.

So what does that transalate to in terms of baffles? I would like to run a deep refugium / frag area in the sump .....


What is the highest baffle i can run to get a deep refugium?
According to my calculations the highest baffle can only be 9 inches (half of the 40 breeder height)? From speaking with jgraz and Kschwesr, the baffles would have to be.

From left to right (overflow to return )
9, 10, 8, 9... Is this correct? and if so does that mean that refugium will only be 9 inches deep?

The requred cutout of the sump width-wise is 12 inches for the skimmer section, 19 inches for the refuge and 5 for the return. Any comments and checking of my calculations would be greatly apprecited

Edwin, your water-loss numbers are unacceptable!


You have “standard” tanks with behemoth overflows. Raise your LocLine returns so they are close to the surface, or install siphon breaks. Both tanks should drop about an inch (or less), which calculates to 5 gallons for the 120, and 2.8 gallons for the 57. I have my LocLine at the surface:

This way, your water will only drop down to the bottom of the saw-tooth on the overflow.

Just saw your WTB for the 75 gallon for a sump. I think this is a good choice and will better handle the volume of water passing through the sump. Not to mention that it will easily fit into that new stand you have.

Hey! I had nothing to do with this. I think the name of the person who designed and built this behemoth was Gabrielle (sorry, I’m terrible with names), but here’s her picture with her sitting on her creation.

While she did all the work, Kevin, Jose, you and I sat around drinking beer and eating pizza. She is obviously not happy about the level of the stand.

Edwin, you were not kidding about the size of the stand. I agree with Paul, a 75 would be perfect. That would give you plenty of room for a large fuge and more then accept the volume of water from the drain down. And you'd still have plenty of room for all the other equipment to boot.

Lol. Great pictures Paul. Let me tell you I was happy to go back to my 12 hr days. She worked us hard. I have to agree that the water loss numbers are way high. We will have to take a look and see where it is all coming from. As for a bigger sump, I say the bigger the better. We obviously have the room...lol

Wow, great job on the stand guys. Edwin, are you planning on using the section on the right to install all of your Reef Angel equipment? If you haven't planned on it already, I'd like to suggest you consider at least partially sealing off that whole section to house all your electrical equipment from the sump area to keep it all away from moisture.

That was the initial plan. But now with the 48 inch tank. I might have to at least keep the ATO in their

Wow took me a while to find this thread I didn't realize how long ago this was. Me and Edwin just finished everything up early today. Here's some pictures

Just gotta tighten up a few things such as the little bit if light leaking through. Otherwise pretty much done.
