sump design

I have some space constraints under my 75 gallon display but want a larger sump. couple questions, do you think I should drill some small holes in the 1st baffle? is the single baffles good enough, for both sections? My plan is to put some LR between then fuge and return section. the skimmer and return both have to go on the right side

There is no way at all to put your skimmer on the drain side? What type of skimmer are you using?

I would put a full triple baffle bubble trap on the return side to keep any bubbles from getting into your return pump and back into the display tank. Also, you may want to put a double baffle on the drain side with the first baffle low and the second baffle high. This would force the water to flow from the bottom through the rock.

As long as your running just rock (no sand) in your refuge I think that would be the better way to go. It will ensure that the water passes through the rock and not just over the top. Adding the extra baffles will help keep bubbles from getting into the return section also.

We've used plexi in all of our glass tank sumps. Hasn't been a problem.

Someone had an issue with choosing plexi that was too thin to support the weight of the water. Other than that, you'll be fine.

Good luck and shout if you have any questions.

One word of caution . . . . silicone in a well ventilated area and refrain from sticking your head in the tank too much while your doing it! Wow, that stuff kicks out some vapors!

On the outside of a tank that would be critical. As baffles? No big deal.

I went to lowes to pick up some plexi and found out they cut glass! got 4 baffles for $13.50 cut to size!!! I would of used plexiglass because it's easier to work with but the glass was way cheaper, and cut to size

If it's not too late, remember the evaporation will occur in the return section. I see you have it 5" wide. Being that you have to account for the water that will return to the tank when the power is off, it will not leave you too much room to work with. Is the return pump a submersible?

wow , what lowes was that ? i called the lowes in Old bridge and they told me they only cut acrylic. I wound up getting 5(9x17) 1/4" baffles for $50! what size glass did you get for 13.50?

I bought 1 sheet of glass for 13.50 and I got 4 11 7/8 x10 pieces cut... sweet

as for the 5" return section... I know that is small... and it's too late..

be careful with those thin glass sheets especially if its to support the fuge side as Ive heard numerous cases of the glass shattering . thats why i ordered 1/4" glass from the shop plus its for a 50g breeder.
