Hello,

I am just wondering what is the best filter accessories to install into my sump (AIO portion) of the tank? I see people putting carbon bags media reactors? etc...

I am just wondering if someone can help me out!

I think it's a matter of necessity. For a new cycling tank....nothing, just some sponge/floss to catch the junk that'll be floating around.

Later on when some fish are added, you could go with carbon just to keep the water clear. That with a skimmer should hold you down for a while.

I've run:

A biopellet reactor, carbon, gfo, matrix.....you name it in my AIO tank. As it "matures", you'll find that less stuff will be needed.

Right now, I'm only running a fuge and and a skimmer in mines.

I will be running a Tunze 9001 protein skimmer, this shouldn't be added till after it cycles correct?

I plan on having a fuge... chaeto and a light.

I see people use media reactors in place of one filter sock, thoughts on this? That would contain a carbon bag and others you mentioned previously.

in a AIO you can add chemipure blue it will do your carbon / phosphate/resin all in one bag
I would add marine pure balls for bio filter.
then a sponge or poly filter the top or use a sock if it has that option

Wouldn't the protein skimmer take care of bio?

I'll def look into chemipure blue - I've heard that talked about a LOT.

The AIO has a spillover into 2 socks so that takes care of that !

You need somewhere for the beneficial bacteria to live. So you can use marine pure so the bacteria can live there.
The skimmer is only to remove and clean the water

Marine pure? You can rinse them occasionally in tank water. But you don’t replace them. If you replace them you are removing the benificial bacteria

Thanks!! That's savings to my ear! I was under the impression I'd be replacing regularly. So the protein skimmer removed bad bacteria while the good bacteria clings to these. A fuge will also be good bacteria correct ?

To be clear. I am sharing what I believe to be correct. Should anyone on the forum have a slightly different view. Trust them and ignore me
Skimmers remove microscopic solids. And they do it indiscriminately. So no. They don’t remove bad bacteria and ignore good ones. Primarily they remove proteins. The marine pure does the same thing “live” rock does. It gives the “good” bacteria a place to colonize except products like marine pure have many many times the available surface area then rock and therefore do more per square inch. Although yes bacteria can thrive in a fuge if given the right environment. The primary purpose of the refugium is a place for refuge from predation. (Hence the name). So the fuge can serve several functions. It can host bacteria, amphipods, copepods. Give refuge to a fish that is being bullied. It can grow macro alge to help export nitrates and phosphates (But be carful it can remove to much if used indiscriminately). It can add water volume to your system to improve stability it can even help stabilize ph swings a little by utilizing a reverse lighting schedule. I am sure there a more things it can do but I would call them not a necessity but a plus if you have the space and budget.

Wow this was helpful. I do plan on putting a fuge for sure. It may not be giant but I'll use the middle chamber for growth and refuge

They have hang on the back fuge you can buy.
A lot of people also use aqua clear filters and modify it into a refugium.

But if you want to save space on a small tank
You might look into a algae scrubber.
You don’t need it now you can buy it or DIY

I should be able to fit a fuge in my middle chamber. it's roughly 2 feet x 5 inches
