I agree with others with the algea sheets as an extra and the tang can munch on anytime,but also give it a nice variety of other foods suitable for tangs.
I actually buy the “sushi” algae at my local oriental supermarket. I get about 25 large sheets for $3.99. I feed daily, half a sheet.
Here’s what I do:
I first cut the sheets into quarters using either a paper cutter (which I no longer have) or a straight edge and sharp razor blade knife. I usually cut 5….6…7 or so sheets at a time:
I package these cut sheets into two zip-lock sandwich bags.
When I’m ready to feed, I take two of these quarter sheets and first fold it it half and cut on the fold line:
I then fold it in half again, and cut on the fold line:
I then clip this into an algae clip and now cut up the sheets about an 1/8 inch wide…maybe ten cuts or so…nothing precise.
Now it’s ready to be placed in the tank. These thin strips allows the fish to get a mouthful without just pulling out a large sheet that ends up floating around the tank.
Paul, I must have gotten that idea from you a while ago, because that's pretty much what I do with my algae sheets too. Only difference is that I usually pre-cut mine into "portion" size rectangles, AND pre-cut all the strips on the outside edges. Say if you have 3" long portions, I would cut strips like you have but about 1" long on both ends. That leaves about 1" in the center and holds them together pretty good. I package them in zip loc sandwich bags so they're ready to go when I feed.
Even though my strips aren't cut all the way up, they're cut enough that when the fish eat and tug on them it rips right up to the clip.
At feeding time, I just pull one piece out, fold it in half and clip it. I try to grip the algae with as little as possible so as not to leave any trapped in the clip... which ends up becoming waste decaying in the tank. For some reason, my fish won't eat a piece that's waterlogged from being in the clip all day. Maybe it's too mushy?
Anyway, this makes it so easy... my wife can even handle it when I'm not around.
