Tank temps?

i dont think 74 is too low (close though) and i dont think 80 is too high (also close though) but i think a 6 degree swing each day is a bit much. everyone will have different opinions on this, and i am far from an expert, but i like to keep my tank at about 77. my heater comes on at 76, my fans come on at 78, and my chiller comes on 79. my tank stays generally at 77 year round.

Agree with Bill.

Joe run a heater and stabilize the temp around 77-78 during night cycle. 6 degree swing is a bit much. How is it generating so much heat? You run T5s and the canopy is way higher than the way I have it set up.

I also have mine stable at 77-78 chiller is set at 79. I also have two heaters in my sump incase one fails youll have a backup. Should really look into but how do you get the fans to come on at 78. Is this a house fan or pc fan with temp controll.

The heat is just from the house, since the tank is in my loft and the heat rises to it. I have a ceiling fan on all the time to push the hot air back down. The tank is at 76.4 this morning, but I will raise the heater up to 77. So 77-80 is okay then? My nano tank sits at 75 year round, never higher or lower

If raising the tank temp raises the end number on the high side then you'll need to do something to add cooling to the tank during the light cycle. Adding a fan over the sump that runs with the lights usually helps this.

kinda of concerned is the temperature rising up to 80 in the winter time because i would hate to see whats it going to be when summer time comes. You would definitely need to get that checked out. I honestly think that's too much of a swing 6 degrees

I think a blanket range is a bit misleading. It does depend a bit on what you have in your setup. For example Australian stuff does much better at 73-75 than 79-80. Lowering our frag tank from 79 to 74 did wonders for our corals. They are a lot happier.

Swings are hard on the livestock. The warmer you have the tank the more problems you will see with nuisance algae and red slime. My tank was running 80 in the summer and is at 76 now but swing was slow. I suspect it will creep back up to 80 in the summer.

Okay thanks a lot, I will raise the night time temp so the swing is less. And I will also try adding a fan in the sump area to try and keep it cooler when the lights are running

Stability is definitely the key. Minimize the swing however you can. I agree with the others who said that it matters less what the TEMP is than the SWING. Let us know how that works out.

You'll have to see if that just moves the swing or if it helps eliminate it. My guess is that it will move it, but only experimenting will tell you for sure. But unless you let the house temp drop at night (we do) I think you are seeing a light swing.

Joe,

Try putting the heater on a timer in addition to control from it's own thermostat. Allow it only to heat for 6-8 (eg. turn on 2-3 hrs after lights out and off 2-3 hours before lights on) hours during the middle of the night cycle.
