I never thought about this until I had to dose a tank. When you first set up a tank, take note of the actual amount of water you use- it's hard to figure it out later on subtracting for substrate, and rock- many treatments call for exact volume for the dosing amount

There are tests/calculators available to determine actual tank volume. They typically involve an accurate salinity test, the addition of a known volume of water at a known salinity, and then an actual salinity re-test. Here's one:
