The pet shanty out of business

Was out at ocean gallery yesterday and figured since I was out that way I'll stop by the shanty. Had a for sale sign in the window closed for good. Not sure how many of you have been there to recall the 30 year old leather they had that was the size of a trash can lid!

Last weekend on the way to Feng's Reef, I saw the same thing. Charlie and his family there were awesome people to deal with. I can't belive they wen't bankrupt but I guess Fish Stores are not really profitable these days. I never knew they were facing bankruptcy and it would seem that the costs were never relayed to the customers. I think Charlie had wanted out of the business for a while and was ok with it closing down.

I'm always sad to see places like that go out of business. I think of my fish stores as my own private thing. Like your favourite bar where everyone knows your na... err Tank. I'm blessed to be able to source new places for coral and fish but I'll miss giving Pet Shanty my business. They were 1 of few stores that I found competitively priced.

With the advent of the internet and the getting EVERYTHING at the lowest possible price mentality, it makes it difficult for LFSs to survive. Here is a great rant that explains much of the issues

This is one of the reasons why I think it's important for us to utilize our sponsors for group buys whenever possible.

Did a little reading this morning and found "Steve the coral" the large leather was donated to jenkinsons aquarium. That's awesome.

Its sad but the small business retailer is being squeezed out. Whether its the big box or internet based it is very tough to compete.

yeah, i was so disappointed when i found out. it was a good little store - and the owner was a standup guy.

Very sad. I recall that huge leather. My kids recall the park next door (although whenever we visited it was off season).

I was just at jenks a few weeks ago and don't recall seeing Steve anywhere. Maybe he is just not on display yet. I was wondering what they were doing with him or where he went.
