Tunze 6100 and 7091 controller

Its me again.

Im still sorting through all of the equipment I recieved and I found a tunze 6100 and 7091 controller. Doesn't seem to be a bad find. Since it was not in the tank it had a lot of die off so I used vinegar first to get all the coraline off the outside so I could open it up and clean it out. After cleaning out the dead snails and brittle stairs I rinsed it in a couple of RO baths and plugged it in.

It looks to be working great but as of now it may be too much flow for my tank.

I ended up realizing I had a controller with it but when I plug this in the 6100 doesnt turn on. Im asuming the controller is bad but I wanted to know if anyone has any experience/advice on these before I go and buy a new controller.

Also does anyone have any advice on where to put this in my 72 gallon bow?
Do I put it on the bottom and have it blow into the rocks? Should I put it up top and point it down across the tank? What type of flow should I be looking for in the tank?

you sure it's the 6100 and not the 6000? the difference is that the 6100 utilizes that larger sized driver (think hockey puck sized). The 6000 uses the smaller driver (think air hockey kinda).

I assume the 72 gallon is 4 feet long? if so I'd place it in the back right and aim across the tank. Another possibility would be to place it in the front and aim it across the front of the bow. I wouldn't place it too far down since it's likely to kick up a lot of sand (if you have it).

before buying a new controller you should check with roger over at tunze. He will then offer you either the option of cost to replace, or replace it for free, or say it's a total loss and option for the newer 7096 or something. You can reach roger on the tunze forum in reefcentral dot com.

On the back it says 6100.10 and it does have a hockey puck sized driver.

I see that this is a very expensive circulation pump but am curious as to what makes it so expensive, or so much better than say something like this?

Yes this kit is lower flow but if you have a couple of them or ever 4 of them on all corners of the tank isnt this accomplishing the same thing?

The only reason Im asking is that Im probably looking around close to $100 in parts to get this mounted and running how I would like to in the tank.

Tunze and Vortechs are really the best pumps you can buy. The reason they cost so much more is that they are made better and will last a lot longer than the pumps you linked too. You will probably throw more money at replacing the JBJs than on the Tunze up front. I know nothing about the Tunzes as I have been a vortech guy for several years now. Plus the customer service from Tunze is almost worth the price alone, I know they have top notch customer service which you will not get from JBJ.

Thank you Mike. It also looks like Tunze allows you to buy every little piece of the power head if you needed. Looks like Im just going to buy another controller and mounting kit and get it together.

for the record - tunze no longer makes the 6100. the 6100 and 6000 are identical in every way, shape, label included - except the hockey puck driver are different sized. Many people think they have the 6100 because the label says 6100 - but that doesn't define the type at all - it's the hockey puck driver. When they made them - you actually had to pay the extra $80 for the 6100 sized hockey puck. Anyways these days for these discontinued pumps - I think you can get them significantly (50%) off retail (assuming you can even find them new anymore). Is yours the really old brown ones or the black model?

As for comparison. You are comparing discontinued products by tunze (made in germany) with knock-off brand new products from boyus rebranded as jbjs (made in china). Quality aside - one can generally state that items that are made in Germany typically are more expensive than items made in China.
