Unplanned System Outage

Sorry guys. Some sort of power anomally struck last night around 9:30pm, which caused both the firewall and primary host to lose power. For some reason, neither box came back up when power was restored. I phyically went to the servers this morning at around 9:00am to restart the boxen.

All is now well, but I'm unhappy with a 12 hour outage. I'm currently researching colocation services. Does anyone have any experience with an affordable colo center easily accessible from NJ? I've been researching http://www.twshosting.com/ a bit, they look to have some real nice deals. Anybody have experience with them?

Colo's are good, my company uses one. The only time were down is when a individual branch is down. The problem is my colo is in Atlanta. Research Level 3 Common. I heard they were pretty good. They have a colo in the city, no sure about Jersey. What about a UPS? They are good for short outages.

Yeah, the current system is on a pretty beefy UPS... Not sure what happened, actually. I haven't been home much lately. Noticed the outage last night, went home this morning to check up. 2 of 4 servers were powered down. No record of a power outage either.

Really, the colo idea is to allow me to move... I've been in my current location a long time, but I'm getting sick of the neighborhood and the traffic. Right now the two things that keep me from moving *easily* are the servers (I have a 42U rack in a back room) and the tank. I figure I'll have to transition the servers no matter what if I move, so might as well do it now. The tank is something I'll deal with when the time comes...

I'll check out those companies. I may not do colo either... TWS has a nice hosting package that gives root on the box, should allow me to run vservers pretty easily, not have to worry about driving out to Long Island (or Atlanta!) to fix a blown power supply, etc... This site only generates about 3KBps sustained, so that shouldn't be any problem in terms of bandwidth... Though keep posting guys! Let's overload my connection so I can justify a FAT PIPE!!! ;D

Wacky to see it flat lined like that from last night. And I thought it was me! LOL! Thanks for letting us know what had happened J. Into every life a little rain must fall. We'll get over it ;)

C'mon guys, lets push 5!

Another option, and a little cheaper would be a battery operated generator. Some people use them for Sump pumps during storms.

Am I the only one who has no idea what these people are talking about? Colo?? Thats out west, no? "root on the box"....HUH? "fat pipe"??? My mom warned me I might find stuff like this on the internet, but she calls it that "thingy". ( the internet mind you) ;D
