Most corals are in a symbiotic relationship with algae that helps in “feeding” the corals.  So if you have corals, you need relatively strong lights…metal halide, T5s, compact fluorescents.  If you have fish only, then you can get away with a simple fluorescent light fixture.

Welcome aboard! The are different views on the use of UV lights on a reef setup. I personally have used one in the past and after some discussion in this forum removed it and didn't notice a difference.
