UV Sterilizer...

I have one that I bought used a year or so ago. Do I really need one? My Tank is 2 years old, its a 29 gallon. The Sterilizer is from 1995 and I believe the bulb has been replaced... But I am unsure.

Re: UV Serilizer...

Hi...Tell us what type of tank..reef or fish only....and what animals you have and are planning to keep. Also a brief description of your setup would help as effective use of a sterilizer depends on water flow and contact time as well as the wattage of the sterilizer itself.

i have a 29 Gallon FOWLR right now, i would like to maybe keep corals in the future if I had the money for a better light. I have about 60lbs of Live rock, 40lbs of live sand, a biowheel 240 power filter, a cascade 1000 canister filter, a seaclone 100 skimmer, and a aquaclear 30 that i turned into a fuge just yesterday. i have about 5 or 6 hermits, 3-4 snails (i need more), and a sand sifting starfish, and 2 clowns. and 2 power heads for flow

welcome to NJRC.

My personal take is a UV is an optional piece of equipment for a tank. Though I can see how they may be helpful to counter-act one part of the ich life cycle. Still - if I had X amount of dollars to spend, I'd spend it on upgrading to a better HOB skimmer instead of the UV.
