I wanted to get some anthias for my 90 gallon reef tank. I know they are supposed to do better in groups. I want to purchase three. Is there a specific type of anthias that is recommnded? Any stores that you know of that generally have them stocked?
Lyretails are among the hardy as far as anthias go. You're best off if you can get 6-8 of them, or just 2. 3 is a recipe for disaster. One male and a harem of females. Pretty fish.
Wow, that sounds like a lot of fish. My tank is a 90. My current stocking is as follows: Potters angel, Goldflake angel, Yellow tang, Red Sea Sailfin tang, Maroon clown, Royal Gramma. Nitrates and phosphates have never shown any color change using Salifert.
I have a great skimmer and good husbandry skills, but want to make sure I don't ask for troubles. What would be the best bet. Of course I wouldlike as many as I could get.
I like Starburst anthias, and purple anthias. A some school of them is definitely sweet to look at. I think the hardiest are Lyretails and the Red Fairy, imo.
Bartletts are nice as well. They are small, relatively hardy and are beautiful. They love swimming in schools, and with all the anthias I've kept, they seem to be the most social amongst themeselves and other fish. I have 5 bartletts and one lyretail who sticks to himself unless there's food in the water column
I think if you have enough to school both it would be ok, but if you don't have the room for 2 schools, I'd stick with one type. They do better in packs of their own and ONE starburst isn't going to be happy in a family of lyretails. They're more outgoing in bigger numbers.
