Water Softener for an apartment??

Does anyone know if there is a water softener system that can be installed in an apartment?

For the whole apartment?.. If so I think it could be hard to do as most apartments are on shared plumbing.. But I could be wrong.. But the first thing to do is find out if plumbing is shared or individual

We have individual water....I have my own cold water line and own hot water heater.

Then yes you can.. but I would talk to the landlord first and get the ok
Add edit: Also find out where you can set it up.. Basement would be best if it has one

Do they sell a small unit for an apartment?? I can't find anything. Problem is we don't have much room to install it in.
