Well water worries...

I have a 50ft well that has heavy Iron. I water the lawn pre softener and it makes the sidewalk rusty. My household water runs through a large water softening system that uses salt. The water is much better, but at times we notice some iron in much smaller amounts. Also a few years ago we added a ph unit after the softener company tested and noted the water to be acidic. Now the ph is fine, for the pipes but not sure about a reef tank. A fellow local reefer (Hockynut) also mentioned problems with CO2. Ironically CO2 will cause acidosis. I wonder if the ph treatment will deal with the CO2...

I'm in the process of planning a reef tank and fear the water quality might make this a no go. (Shame. I bought a nice 180g acrylic tank). I'm planned on getting the brs 75g ro/di. But before I make the full commitment to spending some serious cash, I'd like some input on my "well" situation.

Thanks...

Mark...

This thread has some good info for your situation.

Thanks...I just read the whole thread. Useful info. I just checked my tap water for ph (pool kit) and it's around 6.8...not good. I have a glass sitting and will check it in 24hrs. I assume if the ph goes up its related to CO2?

Between the iron and the CO2 and ph, I may have to scrub the reef tank idea. I can only imagine the TDS...

Why scrub the idea, so what if you have co2....you burn through more di resin but you also can buy more or recharge it yourself. I love my reef tank, how many people can view coral with a glass of woodford bourbon in hand and not have to up the life insurance policy;). Go for it!!!!

I don't think you need to scrap the idea. I would set up your rodi like in the thread I linked if it turns out you have high co2. I would plumb the rodi after the water treatment equipment you have already installed. With a little planning you should be able to work it out.
