What does ORA stand for?

ORA stands for Oceans Reefs and Aquariums. They are an aquaculture facility in Florida that propagates fish and corals.

Oh! Really Axpensive!

LOL.

Actually - if hobbyists were to conscientiously make the decision to always purchase aquacultured items - eventually the market will drive the costs down as more competitors seek to enter the market.

Take for example the cheap prices one sees for Seahorses that are wild caught. by purchasing it - we only encourage the divers to get more of them. While tank-bred/raised SH maybe 3x 4x more costly -in the end - it benefits everyone (SH easily adapts to life, and the wild one gets to stay).

I dunno (honestly speaking) how one differentiates ORA items from others...couldn't an unscrupulous dealer claim they were from ORA? i dunno.

Honestly.... you can't, and there are several unscrupulous dealers out there who will attempt to sell corals and fish under the name "ORA" so they can increase the price. The same goes for the label "aquacultured." This is where you, as a buyer, have to take care when selecting a retailer and use your best judgment. If something doesn't feel right, if it seems too good to be true, then move along and don't make the purchase.

As per what ORA stands for -aside from just the obvious answer of the company name- is a matter of opinion. Where I worked, we used to occasionally order clownfish from ORA and from ProAquatix. Both were sending us much better looking and healthier tank raised clowns that our usual supplier. However, the ProAquatix clowns usually came with 25-50% misbarred clownfish to a batch.

Just so you guys know ORA allows retailers to propagate ORA corals and use there name. They have thier own plugs so you know it came from thier tanks but if you want you can sell corals and label them ORA legally as long as you use the phrase "grown from ORA stock" and not "ORA" for example.

ORA pink birdsnest(without ORA frag plug) - illegal/unethical (illegal might be a stong word)

Pink Birdsnest grown from ORA stock - legal/allowed by ORA but still won't have the ORA plug (which IMO is better cause the plugs at ORA are impossible to remove without breaking the coral... at least IME)

If you look at alot of other sites you'll see it. Like www.totallyexoticcorals.com for example.
