What size pump??

Okay so I have built my sump (thanks itzju) and I am going to figure out plumbing this week, but I have no idea what size return pump to get. It will be for a 72 gallon bow front with a 55 gallon sump. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!! I'm hoping to have water in it by the weekend.

What size drain do you have on the tank? Also will this just be your return pump or are you planning on using a manifold and running your reactors from the same pump?

A 1" bulkhead can handle about 600gph when used with a durso standpipe. This is assuming the bulkhead is on the bottom of the tank. So when looking at a pump look for something that is right around 600gph. Depending on how much head you have a mag 7 should work well.

I for one like to oversize my pumps. I put a t in the line with a line going back to the first chamber in the sump with a ball valve to regulate the flow. I then put a ball valve on the return line going to the main display to control that flow. On the line going back to the sump add in a couple t's with ball valves and cap them off. leave enough rise so when you need them you can access them. these t's are for future use. media chambers, calcium reactor, another tank, water changes etc. it makes it much easier to put them in now then trying to do it later. it will also save you from buying more pumps down the road. as you use those extra lines just cut back on the flow to the sump with the ball valve.
