what to do with old tank

Hey everyone

my sister just bought me down my old 38 gallon tank, it was my first reef tank and it's still in good shape. It has a mirror back, ever seen one of those. Now I need to figure out what to do with it. Any ideas?

Sump? Quarentine? Fuge? I bet the mirror backing would help the algae grow faster.

If you have good lights on it, i assume you do because it was an old reef tank, I would go with the frag tank. If not you can grow algea under regualr Low output bulbs, especially with the mirror background like phyl said.

You're right phyl

the mirror does make things a lot brighter, I had URI VHO's over it when it was set up, it was nice. But I don't have the ballast anymore and would rather just got with something like 4X54 T5's. I know I'm going to have to get a new stand fro my 90, maybe I can use it as a sump for it. Or use it for water storage, what do think about that?

And I would love to make it a frag tank, but that's another tank and the wife may not be feeling that, lol.

I wouldn't use it for water storage. You won't be able to keep it sealed and being exposed to air would expose the water to contaminants. My guess is that it won't fit under the stand of your 90, but time will tell about that.

You're right

as of this moment it won't. But when I get the new stand I should be able to put it in there from the top, or get a stand that has side entry, which would probably be a whole lot more expensive. But I know I need to get a new stand. The doors are falling off my current one, and I don't want to chance it coming completely apart. Maybe I'll just set it up, since I'm keeping the 90 in the basement. I have great hardwood floors, and I think the 90 would do them some damage, weight wise.
