What to do...

I had a nice hole in one of my pieces of live rock and decided I would put a plug in there. Every once in awhile I would notice that the plug would be on the sand upside down. When I went to put the plug back in today I noticed something move and realized there was a bivalve right next to it.

It doesnt look like any other mussel or whatnot I have in my tank so I was surprised when I saw it there. Any idea if I can move this off the rock without killing it? Id like to use the hole for a frag since its just perfect but this guy doesnt want to share. Id hate to kill it so im just curious what you guys think.

I’m no expert, but I believe bivalves “cement” themselves to the rock. Accordingly I think it’s real iffy trying to move it and keeping it alive.

i would find a hole some where else...
and leave it alone ( seriously )...
it is is not harm to the harm... why kill it?
if you want some rocks with holes... i can give you few...
let me know

With all the running around im doing today I forgot I posted this and actually went in with a dental pick and gently scraped it out and relocated it to the other side of the tank. No damage to the shell and now its wedged in another rock. Just checked on it a couple minutes ago and it was open and then closed again when I touched it. Time to just let him sit back and relax in his new spot.

Atleast I figured out what was kicking my frag out every night!

I usually drill some holes in the rock, with a masonry drill bit. But, snails and hermits will sometimes knock over the frags in the holes.

I will not out another piece if rock in my tank without drilling some holes. Like insurance, they are there when you need. There is so much going on in our tanks that mist people won't see the unused holes.
