What type of clam?

And should it go in the sand or on rock? Sorry for the terrible pic

Looks similar to my purple w/black crocea clam.

Depends on tank size and lighting that you have. Mine is about 6 inches and he is on the sand under 6 39w t-5's in a 58 gal oceanic tank. If he was smaller in size with my lighting I would have raised him up higher.

More info might help

I'm sure people are going to ask the tank size and lighting to help determine where to put him :D

he's got a nice 8 bulb T5 fixture in a 90 gallon...I can tell from the pic.

;)

just kidding...i read it in his tale of the tank.

Croceas (in the wild that is) are rarely found on the sandbed. If you're going to put in on the sandbed, do it a favor to feel secure and place a small flat piece of lr or tile or clam shell under it so the foot can secure onto it.

Oh yeah I agree with ynot - looks like a crocea.

Crocea for sure. The shell would be more intricate on a maxima. Can go on sandbed or rock. It likes to burrow a bit but what hawkeye said is true. It prefers to attach to a piece of rock but most people don't do this so they can be moved more easily.
