wild caught cleaners

i have read on RC that you can go to certain places in Jersey, dont know exactly where and pick up crabs and snails etc, if i was ever to do something like this when i go fishing would i b able to put them in my tank?

I put a few hermit crabs from Shark River in my tank but had to take them out because they liked to perch on the corals.

i herd of a petstore in south jersey...ocean pets i think the name was...they said they used to catch wild seahorse but he never disclosed the info.

in my experience the hermitt crabs from new jersey chow down on corals.  I have only tried a few but I wouldnt even bother.  the sea horses from around here like colder water.  during the summer months u can catch some tropical fish that make their way up from the carribbean.

I have caught tons of snails in Sea Isle city. I never had any problems with them in my tank. I also caught grass shrimp, green crabs, and a star fish. the starfish died, shrimp became food and the crab was too aggressive.

I too tried using the local hermit crabs, although hungry little buggers I found them to be aggressive towards each other.

You'll also find the The Eastern Mud Snail Ilyanassa obsoleta
This snail is very common in muddy sediments and is a deposit feeder, feeding principally on surface sediment diatoms and particular organic matter. It is often heavily parasitized and is an intermediate host for the parasite causing "swimmer's itch," which is a trematode whose dispersal stage burrows into human legs. Often one individual is infested by several species of trematodes. These parasites often invade the gonads, causing reproductive failure.

I don't recommend using either.

one of the pet stores i go to, He was telling me they go to LBI and get blue crab some type of snail and some other inverts

BTW,anyone know the laws for taking stuff out of the water? isn't LR illegal but do you just need a permit for anything else?

wow i read that post and the link in that post that took me to a 10 page thread abut live caught fish. how exciting i am gonna plan a trip to shark river haha

Next Spring we should be doing a few trips at Shark River.  I already found a area with colonys of northern Coral but I want to wait till the water warms up again to collect some.  I plan on trying a cool water tank for local stuff,

Greg,
I would defintily scratch the white coral. You would have better luck keeping scleronephtya or dendronephtya. BTW I met someone who dives in Shark River all the time and brought back a Juv Queen Angel. Also, The SPotfins are doing great and have quadrupled in size and eating every coral polyp the desire!

ok i'm confused so is it legal to fish, corals and inverts from the water or not? If so whats a good place more in central Jersey like LBI or something?

i know tropical fish are legal since they freeze in the winter. I would imagine that the Norther White Coral is off limits, as it should be. DEfintily better left in the ocean. I am not so sure about the snails and hermitts tho.

So much for ocean conservation..... I would leave any northern corals & seahorses that are accustom to our part of the ocean.... just my opinion
