Week fact – New Jersey Reefs.
Did you know that New Jersey has many artificial reefs? By artificial, I mean manmade objects have been sunk, many on purpose, to form solid object on the ocean floor so that corals can attach and fish can find protection from predators. Corals need hard object to attach to grow. Sand tends to move in the water, killing corals that attach there. Ship wrecks have long been favorite dive sites as life quickly attached to the objects. But, cold water corals tend to grow very slowly, so don’t expect to see quick results. Mollusks, sponges and algae and fish will be the early benefactors.

Artificial objects like these are often paid for as memorials and may contain plaques.
