Folks, if you've recently upgraded or renewed your annual club membership but it's still not active, please reach out to the BOD or a moderator. The PayPal system has a slight bug which it doesn't allow it to activate the account on it's own.
Your heater shouldn't cause evap. Generally speaking the heat in your house (dry forced hot air heat?) or fans over the sump are what causes the evaporation. What makes you think it was the heater? You would have to have heated the tank to steaming to cause evap by heating the water.

Very nice. Great work on the skimmer. I know someone is looking to do a DIY skimmer. It would be great if you could post a build thread! *hint hint* ;D
Interesting. I'll have to try that with mine. Though mine came with no leaves so I think I'll be so bold as to cut it off before the bottom leaves. I need them to stay small so that they can stay in my overflow box where I don't need to light them separately from the main tank.
The family is fantastic. The baseball and soccer games are in full force this time of year. The kids are really enjoying themselves and I just love watching how happy it all makes them! Since you asked... Of course I need to show them off!

The turf scrubbers refer to a hair/turf algae that grows somewhat naturally when you setup the right environment (running water over well lit screen). This red "turf algae" pictured is a specific strain of algae, not likely to appear without being introduced. In all the HA I've had, it has never...
My guess is red turf algae. Not sure what the green strands are. They look like some sort of caulerpa. Did you have that in your tank/fuge?
Here's an article on the Red Turf Algae
You wouldn't need vinegar, just soak and scrub. The muratic acid removes the "scrub" part as it breaks down the organics.
One of the 300w heaters we got in the last group buy had the whole end of it crack off. Really aggrivating.
I couldn't use the computer to listen in. Not sure what was happening but I just couldn't get the audio. John was able to on his 'puter. So I dialed into the phone call and listened that way, but still needed to follow along with the chat because while MOST of what happens with the chat makes it...

With the water all touching, I'd think it would have the same effect. I know we feel the tingle no matter what body of water we put our hand into when the system is running and something is zapping.
Be careful because not all hair algae is created equal. Bryopsis is killer to get rid of. Make sure you're POSITIVE what kind of algae you are dealing with before you introduce it to your system.
I agree with Richie in cycling it in a separate system to get rid of the algae (no light, no...
