I wouldn't soak the rubber parts. They seem to loose their holding ability.

If the tank MFG suggests the washer on the wet side, it's still a simple fix. You would cut the pvc, unscrew the nut, install the washer on the inside. You would need 2 couplings to put everything back together again.
