I use my apex jr. mainly to control my heater, and to turn on a fan to cool my tank I don't have central a.c. in my house and with the apex I haven't had the tank go over 82 degrees. I keep my tank at 78.5 and have the fan kick on at 79. I also have my skimmer and return pump hooked up to it for easy on and off when I'm cleaning.

I am building my own controller with a raspberry pi. My system controls four outlets (which are currently my fug pump, Kessils A150s (2 of them), and my in-tank filter. I also read temp and send alerts. I log data such as maintenance schedule etc.. I just got a fake ATO working and when I get time/money I will make a real ATO system.

Controller, Apex. Not only does it monitor salinity, pH and temp but water level in my sump, all my pumps, lights and vortechs. I also just set it up for an automatic water change, which I have been really enjoying. Can you do this with a simple and cheaper solution, sure, but I like the tried and true product and all the functions it offers me.

A controller is not a necessity more like a preventive measure .If you ever have a heater failure ,power failure or even a big ph swing as well as many other problems in this hobby it can alert you.As far as automatic water changes that can be done with 2 simple dosers and 2 simple timers .As an installer I’ve programmed 100’s of apex’s as well as reef keepers controllers .In general the controller is a great thing to have but not necessary if your system is set up correctly
