I tried a bare bottom on a 10g tank (in my girls room) but never liked it. Its just something about the look of sand that make it more of a reef/ocean for me.

Depends, I have both.
Running a 10g pest tank (GSP, Xenia, etc) that was constantly in need of maintenance, got rid of the sand and all is groovie.
Had a 25g softie reef that was bare botttom and kept having diatome probs and algae ggroowth, dropped in 15 pounds of sand all all well there.
Just set up my 2.5g with a 1.5" reef sand bottom, will see what happens.
So, for me its a tank to tank thing.

I started with fine Caribsea Fiji Pink sand. I love the look, but in the first couple of months the sand found a way to get to the sump.

After it settled, I no longer face this issue.

I would actually recommend it, because it looks great.

I see the benefits of a bare bottom, just don't love the looks for LPS that go in the bottom.
