90 gallon with 55 gallon sump/refugium ideas

I am in the process of moving and want to start gathering the parts for my new setup. Currently I have a 55 gallon with a hang on overflow. My next setup I'm buying an aqueoun 90 gallon with left corner overflow I would like to use my current 55 gallon as a sump/ refugium not sue if anyone has any pics or diagrams of the same setup or not. I'm thinking the left hand side of the sump would house my coralife super skimmer 220 , the center being the refugium and right being the area for the return pump. Any criticism would be greatly appreciated thanks Ron

The 55 might be a little high under the stand and make it hard to work in the sump. I forget who did it, but they cut a 55 down to 16" or so and replaced the top trim. I'll see if I can find it.

If your looking at getting a 90 you might also want to consider a 120. The extra 6" gives you a little more room to work. Most people here that have a 90 say they wish they got a 120. Just some food for thought.

I had my 55 gal sump under my 125. Even with the extra room it was cramped under the stand. The Coralife 220 skimmer will barely fit under there. I had the coralife 125 under there and i had to move the sump just to be able to remove it for cleaning. If you build your own stand you can costumize the hight to fit the skimmer and have adecuate room to be able to remove it for maintenance. LIke mentioned above. I would go with a 120 over the 90 if you are going to use the 55 as a sump. My 55 gal sump setup is . 7" filter sock/skimmer(Diablo 2500)/refugium/return pump. I have the refugium at 10" depth and i built a stand for the skimmer to be at 8" depth.

With a 120 you can get a 40B from Petco, they are having their $1/gallon sale, and use that as your sump.

It was a toss up between a 90 and a 110 gallon. The guys at ocean gallery said I would be better off with the 90 as I would have to get higher intensity lighting due to diffusion from the height of the 110. Looking at the 55 in front of me now and thinking about trying to wedge that skimmer in and out from the sump seem impossible. I just picked up a 33 gallon long I think it's 12x12x48" but it's a little small for what I'm imagining. We are still in the market for a house so I'm hoping to be able to put the in the garage or maybe in the basement. Guess trying to repurpose the tanks I have won't be in my future plans

I need some help with picking out a reef controller with capatable lighting I was looking into Neptune systems apex or apex light, I'm clueless on the lighting I would like to go with LEDs but I know they are $$.

Hey rwc I have to agree with Brian,my 90 is only a couple months old and I'm already plotting my move to the 120 I built my stand oversized and the 120 will fit and the extra depth is big... Really think your tank purchase through so you don't regret to much later. Good luck
