A couple of clam question

I have the oppurtunity to pick up a couple of clams for pretty cheap. $25 for both a 5"derasa and a 2"maxima. If the seller still has them by tomorrow morning im thinking about taking them. So now my questions.
1st- How do I know if im ready for them? Im running 4xt5's on both of my tanks and my larger one has been going very well since september. The nano seems to have leveled out and has been running since early Jan. Is there something that i should be looking for in the tank? any assist here would be great.

2nd- If I do decide to get them what should I be looking for when I go. From the pics I recieved, both seem to be resting on the sandbed, and not on stone. Again any tip here would be great also.

Thanks in advance
John

The Deresa should be on the sand. Make sure it is a maxima...the mantel is a giveaway as max's are typically varying shades of blue or gold. Some people confuse maximas with squamosas...but squammys have far bigger "scutes" on the shell and are rarely the blue you see on maximas.

that's a good deal btw...

i'd make sure the mantels are both fully extended and neither show any "pinching". that they react relatively quickly to any movement immediately above their mantel, or by touch. Finally a visual inspection after removal of any egg mass/snails on the bottom to ensure you do not get pyramid snails.

T5s should be enough. Unless you only have 1 on at a time or something...lol.

ps maximas are found on rock and (not as frequently per james fatheree) on sand...at that size I'd consider putting a small shell or something underneath the maxi so it can grip it and feel protected.

I sent him a message also and I was suppose to pick up tonight and he said that he changed his mind and is selling everything in ad for 200.00 kind of got me mad

Well then I guess we both got screwed. He said they were available as of about 4pm. I told him I'd call in morning and if they made it through the night I'd come by. He said ok. Oh well

Lol he texted me around 4:15 saying due to all the requests he has decided to sell as a package I am glad I did not drive 3 hours round trip not to get them I would have been really angry

At least you did not pay ahead of time to someone in the process of moving and taking down a tank and stating that once other things were sold you could come pick up your fish. I guess he sold the two wrasses twice. Much wiser now even among this community!

Wow this guy I making his rounds. I'd be busting some heads if I paid ahead of time.

BTW thanks hawk for the advice. I'll keep it in mind when I finally get one.
