Adventure Aquarium - NJRC....1800 kids later....

I came back from Adventure aquarium and am tired. I was up late getting prepared, putting away 5 gallons of saltwater for transport, making sure I had a airstone, pump, heater, net, bucket, printing out stuff to place on the table.

And then it was just waves of kids with a few bored/uninterested chaperones walking around. Aquatic Obsessions was nice enough to donate a tank for raffle. Not sure who won but we had quite a few people sign up.

The clownfish were fun to have. I think they may have been "too" small since people didn't always see them right away. Of course when one kid saw them - they'd go running to grab the adults or friends and say LOOK AT THE NEMOS!

I had one kid ask me if they were freshwater... ::)

More than one kid asked me why they were so small....(honey i shrunk the fish!) ::) Of course several asked if they were for sale.

We just kept repeating the "mantra" captive breeding is a good thing!

However I did enjoy speaking with some of the staff there. They were excited.

I was going to wrap up and take them home - but mbodell came up with the idea of possibly getting someone at the aquarium to take them for display. As I left (to go back home for my work meeting) he told me the clowns were getting a new home at Adventure Aquarium! Yay!!

I hope to go back in the future and see them. I just wish the drive there were shorter...a ton of highway troopers out there. :p

Mbodell had these cool (dry bleached) coral frags which was great as kids like to touch things. Also had these stickers that were also a really big hit with the kids. Though I don't understand why some adults came and basically "stole" our stuff (e.g. ask for a sticker and take the entire 100 sticker sheet). Also people who came to use our pens (which were free) and just walk away with them sly-like without asking for permission or saying thanks.

But whatever - it was still fun and great to see the people wide-eyed.

Oh and of course as i rushed out this morning I forgot the DSLR so I didn't take any pics. :'(

Great job Phil!

I'll have to make a trip and see your babies when they are settled in.

Thanks to all the members who played a part and to AO for the donation! :D

Well Phil after you left you missed the best part of the day. I went down to check out their reef tank along with the shark tank and cold water system they have going. After talking to them, I have a lot of ideas and they had a lot to offer us, so I am going to work some things out with them for the near future.

Anyhow it was a great day and I really enjoyed the event. I will announce the winner of the tank tomorrow on the home page and call them to ship them the tank.

yep go figure. I'm a bad luck charm because my wife mentioned that she and my daughter had a great time there. Of course that only happens when i'm not the one parenting...lol.

Good job! Thanks for being there. I can't believe that your clowns are now residents of AA. Nice to be giving back and having fun at the same time. Thank you to AO for the tank donation. The Conservation Committee is doing some great things. If you would like to get involved send me a pm.

Phil,
Out of 1800 kids there maybe 50 - 100 that actually learned something and that is what the aim is. Thank you guys for a good job and doing a good service to some kids.

Mike i hope you can get something done with donations of live stock, if you think our quarintine is crazy, those little clowns got some a couple month before they go in a tank.

We tried to get them to give us a space for a tank but at the time we didnt have money and they didnt have permission.

Also we need to pitch a club meeting there or a swap.

Tank is being shipped to her today. She is a teacher at Philadelphia Academy Charter School, which is a nonprofit school. They also expressed a lot of interest in the possibility of a school tank to help their special needs children to calm them down on bad days. 35% of their students are special needs, so this could be a great effort for us if we could pool the resources and help from the membership. Just planting the seed.

They are very excited to have won the tank.

Good Job Mike sounds like something we might be able to do with the DVRC since its is there.

Phils fish will stop you in your tracks.

All thanks to mbodell. His suggestion to see if someone on staff wanted them. I wasn't sure but the good news here was these no longer needed live food - they were happy on the dry stuff. I'd love to get the contact info to ask them for updates on the clowns. They were not the usual size that I would sell as they were a good month smaller than that. Any "normal" reef fish may even see them as a snack (at least the smaller of the bunch).
