Aiptasia Eating Filefish

Got 2 at different times, both in same 110g tank. Feed them regularly and neither has touched a coral. Plus with their color and pattern changes, as well as the chill and explore attitude, they’re my favorite fish in the tank.
I feel same way. Color and pattern changes and the way they swim and hunt. Favorite fish. And so far have no interest in the coral.

I had a filefish, it ate all the aiptasia, then picked at zoas, I had to remove him.
This all very interesting. I wondering if we are all talking about the exact same file fish. And it’s all a complete case of luck. Also. What’s everyone’s experience with lawnmower blennies. Mine loves zoas and gorgonian’s. He may have to go soon

What I think I'm going to do is set my quarantine tank up. When I get one I'll put it in with some zoas and lps and see what happens. I if I can get some aiptasias I'll put them in to. Give it a little test run before I put it in the main tank.

Sponge never heard of a lawnmower eating zoas but I have a yellow eye kole tang that picks at acans. I dont think he is trying to eat then but when he picks at the rocks he ll get then to. All my acans were always sucked in had to move them to my nano.

FILE FISH..... don’t do it backwards. You have the idea. But put just the file fish and the aiptaisia in the QT (NO CORAL) and let that file fish eat. Only feed him sparingly if ever. I have seen this done for a year with claims of never giving prepared food until a few weeks before it’s time to introduce to main display. Even if it means adding more aiptaisia or other pest anemone. This does many things. The big problem is file fish nearly always arrive super small and can only eat little aiptaisia. If they eat bigger ones they have to tear them and that just makes more pest nems. Which is great and why in the QT they can go so long without having to feed them and risk giving them a taste for prepared food too soon. The pests grow as fast as they can eat when they are small. This process feeds and hones his hunting skills. (You just haven’t seen anything as crazy as a file fish hunting). There shape and method of swimming allows them to move and fit in the oddest of areas. And they strike like a cobra as they slowly saddle up next to the pest as to not spook them and give them a chance to pull in to there crevice. Then faster than you can blink. BAM ITS GONE. This crazy long process. End up making a true pest hunter with a lust for them that is peaceful and trust worthy with tank mates and coral. Of course who has time for all this. It’s why many people get two file fish. Put one in QT and other in display. With hopes the display will do His job naturally. Which can sometimes happen but they can and will taste other things. I have been thinking of starting a file fish anemone system. And train file fish for sale. Does anyone think this is a viable venture. Not to make money. Just for fun and help other Reefers.

Yes it is a viable venture but you should make money
Unless your your going reasonable scale. And Im not. I would only want to cover cost. This hobby is way to expensive to make money on small scale projects. Or selling a coral or two. I just like the hobby and if I can help another reefer that’s a plus. Heck. I have given away more equipment and time and received it back from so many others. It’s a complete wash and only enhances my joy of the hobby. And that includes you Diana. Your always there to help. Or letting me know if somthing is out there you saw I needed. And shared welcomed advice. So thank you and all the others in our little community that keeps this thing going including the BOD
