Air stone skimmer vs. New ones Which is better?

I have a skimmer which I think is antiquated and also haven't hooked up yet. If I decide to use it Ill need to get an air pump with a stone and T it off a pump. I plan on buying the mag 9 to use for my sump so it will probably T off that. I have a regular skimmer now with a separate pump that it came with and it draws roughly a half cup every 7 to ten days. The skimmer I currently isn't the best out there yet moderate and does the job till I upgrade. My buddy swears by the skimmer with the air stone but I think its old school...but not sure what to do. Anybody have any suggestions. Are these old school and does anybody still use these? Anything you guys got would be helpful....as always, thanks for the advice!!!!

I have and still run an air driven skimmer on my 75,I love them never any problems.
I do however have the new ETSS sump buddy 40 on my 120 but 25 years ago when I had my first reef, venturi skimmers didn't exist I would hook up the "old school" skimmer run it with a tetra luft air pump variable air out put and use the coralife limewood airstones. The one on my 75 is the first skimmer I bought made by RT.4 marine systems in NJ.

I had a Euro-reef skimmer, I liked but it was little big from my sump. So I just changed over to the Sump Buddy 40. The thing is a skimming MONSTER. Well worth it, and they are located in Becon NY about 45mins north of NJ. Go with the new skimmers.

how long did it take for the sump buddy to break in for you
I just started mine up its not pulling snything out but I am also cycling.
I have had the system running since Monday.

You'll know when the sump buddy 40 is working, mine took about 7-10 days to really start cranking now I pull 1 gallon per week of mud through it.

Air stone skimmer is very good.. Read about it on the web, they are hard to beat. The problem with them is you have to change the are stone often, once a month, they clog up.
